So here is my current arsenal for running, and just for training for Alcatraz!
Left to right – Salomon Speedcross3, Nike Terra Kiger2, Nike Lunarglide6.
You can read about pros/cons of each on many other sites, wrote by much better runners than me. This is a simple post on why I’m using each of these to train!
Starting with the Lunarglide6’s – these are my workhorse road shoes. I do the bulk of my training around the roads of Strandhill & Knocknarae and these are perfect for that. Stable & solid. By the time I get to the end of May, I should have done nearly 700km in them since training started back in December!
Speedcross3 – what are these for? I’m about to start trail running, to break up the road training and because the run in Alcatraz is multi-terrain. Unfortunately trails around Sligo are very much unlike those in the USA…we’re lucky there are trails! The surface usually consists of rocks galore, mud everywhere and on the advice of a great local runner, I’m going with something aggressive that will dig in. I actually bought the Salamons very cheap in a sale with the intention of keeping them until next year when I start hiking again & head off to Yosemite & Half Dome again! From having a pair of Speedcross2 before, I know these are super light, so easy to clean and with a brilliant sole.
Update: Just finished my first 14km trail run of Union Wood in Sligo. That’s 2 loops of 7km….in dry then snowy weather! Speedcross3 felt great straight away and throughout the run. The lugs on the soles dig in well to the loose surface, giving you confidence on the downhill sections and even getting wet, they keep you dry for the most part. And they feel really light.
Finally the Terra Kiger2. Because the Escape run is essentially a trail run, I’ve decided to go with trail runners for the run. I’ll do most of my training in the Lunarglide6’s, but a few weeks before I’ll switch over to the new Terra Kiger2 which looks like it can handle both trail & concrete quite easily. It’s a much lower profile shoe, a little bit lighter & should be good for racing in.
I do have one other joker in the pack! A tip from a previous entrant of Alcatraz. Because of the half mile run between the swim exit & transition1, instead of looking for 1 bag amongst 2000, I’m going to swim then run in a pair of Vibram FiveFingers. That’s the plan and I’ll confirm it the first time I swim in the shoes.
