Another end of month post. These months are flying by – 3 months of training is done & dusted…we’re half way to Escape! 3 months to go!
Swimming is going well in the pool. I didn’t do a TT at the beginning of the month, that will be done this coming week when I’m back on form. One other thing I learned going to a photography workshop in London last week is that my body does not respond well to taking 3 days completely off of training for Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon…so thats it! Between now & June 7 there will be no days off! Well there’s always one day active recovery a week, sometimes 2 if I have back-to-back weddings!!
March will be my last month of just pool swimming, as I’ll be hitting the very cold Atlantic come April! The plan is to do my long distance stuff in the sea, then do two CSS threshold speed sessions in the pool. May will continue that way too but with another sea swim.
February was the first time I’ve been on the bike, on the turbo in the enclosed dryness of the shed! I’ve taken to the bike ok, but I’m now looking forward to getting on the road proper! March’s plan will involve two days of biking on the road but also one turbo session and for that session I’m going to simulate, as best I can using gears only (my turbo is basic & old!), the Escape bike route – elevation for that route is below.
Running…dare I say I’m starting to enjoy it a little! February has gone very well. Now I have layers upon layers on, I dont even notice the cold! The hill sessions are going as well if not better than the long run. For February I started doing a fartlek 5km once a week, just to work on a bit of speed. That session was followed immediately by two runs up the Dolly Hill climb…that is a killer.
March will see the fartlek session shelved for a month while I start trail running. Alcatraz is essentially a trail run after all so I need to be able to run on trails. That’s brought another thing into the mix…what trainers will I race in? More on that in a later post.
