NEW RELEASE

I spent a few days towards the end of March up around Lough Gill in Sligo trying to find new images. There were two particular mornings that stood out for me, one for an amazing sunrise, and I’ve just sent those images off to be drum scanned. And then there was this particular morning below, where because of extremely foggy conditions, I  spent the morning looking for more abstract images, as you couldn’t see the lake itself because of the fog!

I’ve titled this shot ‘Simplicity’, and it was shot on the Hasselblad Xpan, 45mm lens on Fuji Velvia.

EPSON PANO AWARDS 2012

I’m pleased to announce that I have been awarded 5 bronze awards in the 2012 Epson Pano Awards! The Epson International Pano Awards showcases the work of panoramic photographers worldwide and is the largest competition for panoramic photography, and the standard of entry is generally the best of the best. Needless to say I’m delighted with 5 of my 6 entries getting a bronze! I’m even more happy as 2 of the images were taken near my home of Strandhill in Sligo, Ireland!

‘Strandhill Surfer’ and ‘Enlightened‘ were recently showcased in my Sligo Wide exhibition.

Here are the images which scored bronze, top to bottom: Zion National Park, Strandhill Surfer, Enlightened (Strandhill), Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Antelope Canyon.

All images, as with all my panoramics, were shot on the Hasselblad Xpan camera, 45mm lens with Fuji Velvia film.

NEW RELEASE

Welcome to Strandhill in County Sligo! Actually, it’s more like Strandhill, Sligo Bay, Coney Island, Blackrock Lighthouse and Raghly all in one shot!

Shot on the Hasselblad Xpan with my newly acquired 30mm lens, at sunrise towards the end of March, a short hike to get onto the side of Knocknarae was required before sunrise to get in position for this shot! It was then just a matter of waiting for the sun to hit the sand dunes at the right time.

Strandhill & Surrounds – shot on Hasselblad Xpan2, 30mm lens with Fuji Velvia.

As a side note, I shoot a lot of images around the Strandhill area, for one simple reason…I live close by so can see what the sky is doing, is it changing colour, it is going to do something special. Last night was the perfect example. All day was cloudy and threatening to rain. But around 8pm or so, a big gap on the horizon appeared which meant that the sun would pop out for a few minutes just before sunset. At the last minute I headed down to the beach beside the cannon, set up the Xpan in the quickest time ever and starting shooting. For about 5 minutes it was glorious, just like the 1st image below, probably the best sunset of 2012 so far. Everybody on the beach wall was in awe of this sunset.  As soon as the sun went below the horizon, inevitably, the clouds & light got even better, kind of like the 2nd image below. These images by the way, were quickly taken on a Lumix point & shoot, something I bring along to most shoots to document the light & conditions that I’m shooting film in. I shot the sunset & subsequent half hour afterwards on the Xpan, but with film of course, I’ll have to wait a while before seeing the results! Stay tuned!

NEW RELEASE

For ‘Sculptured Waters’ I wanted to show the rough seas pushing up on the protection boulders of Strandhill beach, but this alone wouldn’t make an exciting image. To complete the picture, I really needed a break in the clouds just before the sun disappeared behind the Ox Mountains. Occasionally on a grey, miserable wet day, right at the end of the day we get a glimpse of sunshine, just for a few moments – this was one such moment.

Standing on slippery rocks with an incoming tide made this shot quite a challenge. While waiting for the break in the clouds, there were a few times when the water from the waves came a little too close for comfort!

Sculptured Waters – shot on Hasselblad Xpan2, with Fuji Velvia.
